Northampton Firefighters Reach Contract Agreement, Pending City Council Approval
Northampton, Massachusetts, and its firefighters have reached an agreement on a new contract. But there's no guarantee this lengthy labor dispute will be coming to an end.
Northampton's firefighters have been working without a contract for the last three years. This deal not only covers back pay for that timeframe, but extends through 2016. It is about 90-thousand-dollars less than what an arbitration panel awarded firefighters, though the city council rejected that last month because of the cost. Northampton Mayor David Narkiewicz says he consulted councilors before starting negotiations again...
"...to get a sense of the council as to what type of contract, what type of funding level might be more supported," Narkiewicz says.
