Mass Legislature Considers Minimum Wage
Hundreds of people turned out for a statehouse hearing today to testify on proposals to raise the minimum wage in Massachusetts. The minimum wage was last raised here in 2008, to eight dollars an hour. Lawmakers are considering proposals to raise it to nine or even 11 dollars an hour. But Patty Federico of Weymouth, a cinema worker who makes less than nine an hour, says even 11 wouldn't be enough.
"I think this bill should be about equaling the cost of living. Isn't it common sense? Am I wrong there?"
Business interest like the National Federation of Independent Businesses opposes raising the minimum wage. The Massachusetts Retailers Association says lawmakers should be careful to keep it on par with neighboring states.
