Army Specialist Mitchell Daehling of Dalton, MA Dies in Afghanistan
A soldier from Dalton, Massachusetts died this week in Afghanistan. Army Specialist Mitchell Daehling was a 2006 graduate of Wahconah Regional High School, and leaves behind his parents and younger brother and sister.
Mitchell Daehling was a quiet, but hardworking student at Wahconah high school, according to the school's counselor John Kovacs. Kovacs also coached Daehling when he played varsity soccer his junior year. He said Daehling transferred to the school in the middle of his sophomore year.
"He had two and a half solid years with us and he was a kid that was just a nice kid, and on the quiet side, but involved enough to make an impact, a positive impact."
A statement on the school's website says "the strength and determination that Mitch possessed serves as a model for all Wahconah students." Daehling went on to Daniel Webster College in New Hampshire, and according to his Facebook page, was married last June. In a statement, Congressman Richard Neal says Specialist Daehling was a "brave young man who represented the best of America." The circumstances of his death are not known.
