Racism, Surveillance, and Empire

In response to the events of 9/11, the Bush administration launched a “war on terror” ushering in an era of anti-Muslim racism, or Islamophobia. However, 9/11 did not create Islamophobia, an ideology which has become the handmaiden of imperialism.

The two speakers for this event are:

Dr. Deepa Kumar – Associate Professor of Media Studies and Middle Eastern Studies at Rutgers University. She is the author of Islamophobia and the Politics of Empire. Deepa Kumar’s book examines the historic relationship between Islamophobia and the agenda of empire-building. She has offered her analysis on Islamophobia to numerous outlets around the world including the BBC, USA Today, Philadelphia Inquirer, Mexico’s Proseco, China International radio, and Gulf News from Dubai.

Arun Kundnani – Author of The End of Tolerance Racism in 21st Century Britain and the forthcoming book, The Muslims Are Coming!: Islamophobia, Extremism, and the Domestic War on Terror. Arun Kundnani’s work is about immigration from the Middle East and South Africa and the ways in which the War on Terror has cast brown people in the West. He looks at the experience of immigration but also how counter-terrorism policies in the US and UK reduce the complexity of immigrant experiences.
