Event Description

Kathleen Deep, “In the Thick of It” - 40x32 inches, mixed media, 2017.

Opening Reception: Wednesday, November 15th, 5-7pm Kathleen Deep’s mixed media visions of place transmit a sublime sense of calm and ephemeral presence. Layered photographic, drawing and printmaking based processes distort and emphasize landscape imagery with atmospheric screens of expressive marks, texture and selective monochromatic color. Dynamic juxtapositions of light and dark are evocative of memory, distant time and of momentary transformation. Deep’s website describes her artist process as a dialog of technique, observation, contemplation and intuition: I look far back to the roots of photography when the camera was a drawing aid, and images were not yet fixed and permanent; forming and dissolving in tandem. Using the photograph as a platform, I create the image from memory, adding and erasing what was there or wasn't. The result is a mystery of what is real and imagination, with nuance to the dissolving nature of the early photograph and the mediums historical methodology. Deep has exhibited her work both regionally and nationally. She received her MFA from the University of Connecticut, a BFA in Photography from Cazenovia College and an A.A.S. in Photographic Technologies from Herkimer County Community College.
