As part of a three-day conference devoted to how different region of the world have developed cultural relationships with the ancient Greeks, this discussion will examine Japanese adaptations of Greek works. Mae Smethurst from University of Pittsburgh will lead a discussion about the works of Tadashi Suzuki, Yukio Ninagawa and Miyagi Satoshi. She will be accompanied by Izumi Ashizawa, a stage director and choreographer, who has worked with Suzuki and will also talk about re-imagining Greek myths in her own works. The creative team of Butoh Medea will share their work process and sources of inspiration – Brian Rhinehart (director), Deepsikha Chatterjee (costume design) and Yokko (performer).
