Employment & Internship Opportunities

Applying for an Internship at Five Colleges Studios at UMass Amherst.

Internships are offered for a minimum of one semester or one summer session with the expectation of 8-10 hours per week of student time.  An internship may be renewed for an additional period. The stipend is $10 per hour for paid internships.

Deadlines for internship applications:

  • Fall Semester: September 15th
  • Spring Semester: December 15th
  • Summer Session (late May/early June through August): April 15th

Internship Descriptions

News – Applicants should be interested in journalism and public affairs, familiar with news writing and digital audio production, comfortable interviewing newsmakers and enjoy working under deadline. Students will work alongside New England Public Radio’s experienced news team, learn the basics and get on air. Familiarity with NPR programs and public radio style is preferred. An understanding of basic web production is a plus.

  • Pitch story ideas to the News Director
  • Schedule and perform interviews in the studio, by telephone and in the field
  • Report, voice and mix spot and feature-length stories for broadcast

Production – Applicants should have excellent writing and above average computer skills. This is a good internship for a student who wants to work in broadcasting, but not necessarily in journalism. Students will gain experience in the following areas:

  • Audio production using Adobe Audition
  • Project Organization
  • Persuasive Writing

Marketing – Applicants should have a general knowledge of marketing strategies and above average computer and writing skills. Students will gain experience in the following areas of non-profit marketing:

  • Database maintenance
  • Assist with production of reports
  • Event planning assistance
  • Management of online networking activity including Facebook and Twitter

AudioFiles – Applicants should be interested in content creation and production as well as have above average computer and writing skills. An understanding of basic web production is a plus. This is a good internship for a student interested in audio recording, video editing, and photography. Students will gain experience in the following areas:

  • Work with audio engineers to acquire recordings (music and voice)
  • Audio Production
  • Video capture and editing
  • Photography
  • Legal copyright releases
