Greenfield, Mass. Contemplates a Big-Box Retailer

Last year, Greenfield, Mass. — a former manufacturing town, and the anchor of mostly rural Franklin County — rezoned an area on the outskirts of town, the first step to bringing in a big box retail store — as mayor Christine Forgey had promised during her election campaign. So far, no big box store has come — but many local merchants are wondering whether that sort of economic development will help or hurt the downtown businesses — as well as the city’s homegrown feel.
