Diabetes is a chronic disease — marked by the body’s inability to break down sugars. Twenty million people In America have diabetes — up 14 percent from just two years ago. The Numbers are even more alarming for the Latino population. Nearly half of all Latino children born today are expected to develop diabetes in their lifetime — a statistic attributed to a combination of genetics, body weight, and a sedentary lifestyle. That’s why a health program in Holyoke, Massachusetts has created a hands-on, community approach to help diabetics control their disease in a cultural context they understand.
