Sacred Harp convention in Northampton

This coming weekend, hundreds of people will gather in Northampton, Massachusetts to sing centuries-old music in four part harmony. They’ll be singing shape-note music, hymn-singing that originated in the 18th and 19th centuries, from a hymnal called “the Sacred Harp.” “Shapenote” refers to the system of musical notation, in which each note is assigned a shape– a circle, square, triangle or diamond.
