The film “The Wind that Shakes the Barley” depicts the Irish Republican Army’s fight for independence from Britain — and its subsequent tragic aftermath, the Irish Civil War. The film, directed by Ken Loach, won the Palm d’Or award at last year’s Cannes Film Festival. It will have its area premiere Wednesday night (4/4) at UMASS. UMASS Professor William Matthews has lectured here and in Ireland on this period of Irish history, which started in 1916, with the Easter Rising, a rebellion staged by militant Irish Republicans to win independence from Britain by force. He spoke with WFCR’s Bob Paquette.
