WFCR Broadcasts Springfield Symphony Orchestra Concerts Beginning May 27

[May 22, 2012 — Amherst, MA]  Great symphonies, impressive soloists, American masterworks. All that and “The Planets” too! This is what’s in store for the next six Sunday afternoons on WFCR, in our series of broadcasts of the 2011-12 season of the Springfield Symphony Orchestra. The concerts will be heard from 1-3PM, starting May 27, during Walter Carroll’s Sunday classical music program.

Springfield Symphony Orchestra Maestro Kevin Rhodes put together one of his strongest repertoire selections in 2011-12, from the season-opening all-Russian program culminating in the mighty 5th Symphony of Shostakovich to the mysterious conclusion of Holst’s “The Planets” in the closing concert.

Along the way, perennial favorites like Beethoven’s Symphony No. 7 and Robert Schumann’s Symphony No. 2 can be heard alongside an unusual and heartening selection of American masterworks by Samuel Barber (Adagio for Strings), William Schuman (Symphonies Nos. 3 & 5), Roy Harris (Symphony No. 3), Alan Hovhaness (Guitar Concerto) and William Bolcom (“Prometheus”). The solo contingent includes a pair of young piano stars performing contrasting Concertos: Joyce Yang with Rachmaninoff’s 3rd, and Spencer Myer with Mozart’s 25th. Not to be outdone, the solo strings are well-represented by violinist Axel Strauss and cellist Julian Schwarz, each performing his own Tchaikovsky.

Kevin Rhodes will also introduce each selection in conversation with New England Public Radio’s John Montanari. Please don’t miss your opportunity to find out what great music is being made in our region – and to enjoy a half-dozen splendid afternoons of favorites, masterworks and new discoveries!
