Food For Change, a History of Food Coops in the U.S.

The United Nations has made 2012 the International Year of the Co-Op, focusing on credit unions, textile makers, and stores, among others. The idea is to raise international awareness about a business model that could address poverty, un-employment, and community development. Next week at the U.N. in NYC, a new film about the history of food co-ops will be shown . Western Massachusetts based documentary maker Steve Alves is the producer. He calls it “Food for Change”. He says the first wave of coops in the U.S. happened during the Great Depression
