Pols: New Mass. Senator a Safe Vote on Capitol Hill

Governor Deval Patrick’s appointment of his former chief of staff as interim U-S Senator is being seen as a pick that will ensure unity between Beacon Hill and the Bay State’s Capitol Hill delegation.
William “Mo” Cowan says in Washington, he plans to follow Governor Patrick’s policies.

“There’s not going to be any daylight there at all, because there’s no need. And Senator Kerry has worked in close contact with Governor Patrick, and so you can expect me to do the same.”

Some observers say the choice ensures Patrick will not have to contend with the level of independence potential appointees like former congressman Barney Frank might have displayed.

Congressman Richard Neal represents Massachusetts First District.

“To be candid there’s not a lot you can do in five months. But, you can vote. And I think that’s what he brings to the table. He’ll vote the right way.”

Kerry’s swearing in as Secretary of State is expected Friday – and an election for his long-term replacement is set for June 25th
