Payton, King, Staley, Pitino Enshrined in Hall on Sunday

The Basketball Hall of Fame in Springfield enshrines a dozen new members this weekend.

Three hundred twenty-five players, coaches, referees, league officials – even teams – have been inducted into the hall of fame in the last half-century. Add to that list as of Sunday: nine-time NBA all-star Gary Payton, four-timer Bernard King and five-time WNBA all-star Dawn Staley.

Also scheduled to be inducted is a UMass alum who isn’t getting this distinction because of his old playing days. Coach Rick Pitino, who’s achieved great success at the University of Kentucky and University of Louisville, but also had a handful of disappointing seasons coaching the Boston Celtics.

The ceremony begins Sunday at 2 p.m.
