A Short-Term Senate Insider, ‘Mo’ Cowan Wishes He Was Still There to Help

The federal government shutdown is being felt across the country in big and small ways. The debate, according to William “Mo” Cowan, is about whether the U.S. is moving forward or backwards.

Cowan is a short-time veteran of the U.S. Senate, serving less than six months representing Massachusetts after John Kerry became secretary of state. Like most Democrats inside or outside of Washington, Cowan told New England Public Radio’s Susan Kaplan that he blames a far-right faction in the republican party for the current breakdown.

Cowan is now a resident fellow at the Harvard University Institute of Politics.
