Polls will be open until 8 p.m. in Massachusetts with numerous municipal races on the ballot. Several cities and towns in Hampden and Hampshire counties have a double election, with a race to fill the state senate seat vacated by Michael Knapik.
In Easthampton, City Clerk Barbara LaBombard says she anticipates about 45 percent turn out based on how many absentee ballots came in, and how many voters have already come out today.
“I don’t think that the state senate race is bringing people out,” she says. “I suspect that it’s mostly because of the mayor and council race.”
This is the first time since winning the office in 1996 Mayor Michael Tautznik is not on the ballot. Other contested mayoral races are taking place in North Adams, Holyoke, Chicopee, Gardner, and Leominster.
In Connecticut, the cities of Bristol, New Britain, Middletown, and New Haven are among those electing mayors.
