Massachusetts Sen. Stephen Brewer to Retire

A central Massachusetts lawmaker and chairman of the state Senate’s powerful Ways and Means committee says he will not run for re-election. Barre Democrat Stephen Brewer has served in the legislature for more than 25 years. This summer Brewer lost an internal battle to become the next Senate president. But Brewer says the loss, to Amherst Democrat Stan Rosenberg, is not why he’s leaving.

“He’s a fellow UMass alum, he’s a trusted friend, and he is going to do a splendid job as the next Senate president when that time comes,” says Brewer. “It has no bearing on it at all. Everyone is entitled to the opportunity to retire.”

Brewer says he recently purchased a banjo and hopes to learn how to play it. He says as a 65-year-old cancer survivor, he wants to spend time with his with family and “try other endeavors.”
