A Ceiling Fan, A Traumatic Brain Injury And A New Life

In 1988, when Su Meck was 22, a ceiling fan fell on her head. Her traumatic brain injury wiped out all her memories before that date, and they never came back.

She’s had to re-meet everyone in her life, including her husband Jim and her first two children, and relearn almost every skill. Now, at 48, she’s a student at Smith College in Northampton, Mass., and has written a memoir (with Daniel de Vise) called, “I Forgot to Remember: A Memoir of Amnesia.”

Meck says she was shocked – when researching her own medical history – how little her early doctors understood her profound amnesia. They sent her home from the hospital after 3 weeks.
