For the second time in four years, both of UConn’s basketball teams are in their respective Final Four tournaments this weekend. The women are defending national champions, and the men last won in 2011. The women’s team has won eight national championships over the past two decades. That makes for a no-win situation this year, according to David Borges, a sports writer for the New Haven Register.
“If they win, they’re expected to, and if they somehow don’t win then it’s a huge disappointment and it’s a huge upset. But that said, I think they clearly have the best program and the most talent in the country by a long shot,” says Borges.
Meanwhile, the men’s team is coming off a year when they were banned from the NCAA tournament for former players’ poor academic records. Borges says that’s led to the team playing “with a chip on their shoulder” all season. The UConn men play Florida Saturday night, the women play Stanford on Sunday night.
