The Boston Symphony Orchestra Returns to 88.5FM WFCR

Beginning October 21, concerts from the Boston Symphony Orchestra's 2012-13 Season will be heard from 1 - 3 p.m. on 88.5FM WFCR* during the station's Sunday classical music line up.  

"The Boston Symphony Orchestra has lined up an impressive series of soloists for their fall broadcast season, with repertoire both familiar and varied enough to satisfy all," says New England Public Radio's Music Director, John Montanari.  "Add in the US premiere of a premiere composer's latest -- Kaija Saariaho's 'Cirle Map' -- and Ravel's endearing, moving one-act opera 'L'enfant et les sortilèges' ('The Child and the Spells'), and you've got unusually fresh and engaging programs from Symphony Hall."

The Sunday afternoon concerts are co-hosted by Classical New England's Ron Della Chiesa and Cathy Fuller. Classical New England is the classical music service of WGBH in Boston.   

Below are the first eight concerts to be broadcast as part of this series:  

Oct. 21: Joshua Bell plays Bernstein

Violinist Joshua Bell is the soloist in Bernstein's Serenade (after Plato's "Symposium"), and BSO Assistant Conductor Marcelo Lehninger leads the orchestra in Tchaikovsky's "Romeo and Juliet" Fantasy-Overture and Dvorák's Symphony No. 8.

Oct. 28: Vladimir Jurowski conducts Mendelssohn and Shostakovich

Conductor Vladimir Jurowski makes his BSO debut, leading the orchestra in Mendelssohn's Violin Concerto in E minor, with soloist Arabella Steinbacher, and Shostakovich's Symphony No. 4.

Nov 4: Dutoit and Lugansky

Pianist Nikolai Lugansky is the soloist in Rachmaninoff's Piano Concerto No. 3, and Charles Dutoit conducts Fanfares and Symphonic Fragments from Debussy's "The Martydom of Saint Sebastian" and Martin's Concerto for Seven Wind Instruments, Timpani, Percussion, and String Orchestra.

Nov 11: Opera at the BSO

Soprano Olga Peretyatko sings the  title role in Stravinsky's "The Nightingale," half of an operatic double bill that also includes Ravel's "L'Enfant et les sortilèges," conducted by Charles Dutoit.

Nov. 18: Britten & Dvorak

Gil Shaham is the soloist in Benjamin Britten's Violin Concerto, and Juanjo Mena conducts the American premiere of "Circle Map" (a BSO co-commission) and Dvorák's Symphony No. 7.

Nov. 25: Guerrero conducts Sierra, Tchaikovsky, and Prokofiev

Conductor Giancarlo Guerrero leads the BSO in Roberto Sierra's "Fandangos," Tchaikovsky's Piano Concerto No. 1, with soloist Daniil Trifonov, and Prokofiev's Symphony No. 5.

Dec 2: Upshaw sings Sibelius

Soprano Dawn Upshaw is the soloist in Sibelius's "Luonnotar," conducted by Thomas Adés, who also leads his own "In Seven Days" and Prokofiev's Piano Concerto No. 1, both with piano soloist Kirill Gerstein, and Sibelius's Symphony No. 6.

Dec 9: Zacharias plays Mozart, Haydn, and Beethoven

Christian Zacharias is the soloist and conductor in a program that includes Haydn's Symphony No. 76, Mozart's Piano Concerto No. 18, and the complete ballet score for Beethoven's "The Creatures of Prometheus."
