Greenfield, Mass. Contemplates a Big-Box Retailer

Last year, Greenfield, Mass. -- a former manufacturing town, and the anchor of mostly rural Franklin County -- rezoned an area on the outskirts of town, the first step to bringing in a big box retail store -- as mayor Christine Forgey had promised during her election campaign. So far, no big box store has come -- but many local merchants are wondering whether that sort of economic development will help or hurt the downtown businesses -- as well as the city's homegrown feel.
