Holoke, MA Mayor Alex Morse Reverses Position on Casinos Again
Holyoke, Massachusetts' Mayor Alex Morse has reversed course again and is now halting all casino development plans in the city. Morse says he regrets his earlier decision to consider negotiations with developers interested in bringing a casino to Holyoke. The mayor also says he will return $25,000 "grants" paid to the city by two potential developers seeking to have their proposals reviewed. Morse defeated incumbent Elaine Pluta in 2011 after running on a strong anti-casino platform. But he stunned supporters last month when he announced a new "strategy" to entertain casino proposals. Morse says his change of direction has come, at least in part, from reactions from residents. New England Public Radio's Henry Epp spoke with Morse about his second reversal on casinos.
