Legislative hearings on tap for Massachusetts DSS

Date:
01/26/2007

This week, a new legislative committee begins hearings on the foster care system in Massachusetts. The Committee on Child Abuse and Neglect was formed in response to the tragic case of Haleigh Poutre of Westfield. In 2005, Haleigh was beaten into a coma, allegedly at the hands of her adoptive mother and stepfather -- while she was under the watch of the state Department of Social Services. Haleigh is now 12 and living in a rehabilitation center, though her condition is unknown. WFCR's Karen Brown recently spoke to the State Commissioner of DSS -- Harry Spence -- who said things have changed at DSS since Haleigh Poutre's beating.
