A Malt House Comes to Western MA

Malt made from barley is a primary ingredient in beer. Cargil makes tons of it for beer giants like Anheiser-Bush. But in the farm rich community of Hadley, Massachusetts, a couple of home-brewers were surprised that even with an explosive local-food-movement, they had to buy their malt from Europe, Colorado, or Wisconsin. One day after baking bread with locally grown wheat, they thought -- if they could grow barley, they could make malt. And now, they do.
