"Storm Stories: Path of Fury" Marks Anniversary of Tornado

Storm Stories: Path of Fury, a multi-media exhibition that looks back at the June 1, 2011 tornado, will be on view from June 1 through October 28 at the Lyman & Merrie Wood Museum of Springfield History at the Quadrangle in Springfield. Admission to the history museum will be free for everyone on June 1.

Developed in collaboration with New England Public Radio, The Republican and MassLive, and WGBY Public Television for Western New England, the exhibition will include audio interviews with area residents who lived through the storm, news photos of the damage, video footage documenting the event, and a large graphic display with photos showing the path of the F3 tornado.

Hundreds of people saw their lives dramatically change in a few brief minutes as a result of the tornado that ripped a 39-mile swath through nine towns across western and central Massachusetts, leaving destruction and even death in its wake.  Recorded interviews by the staff of New England Public Radio will look back at what happened and provide updates from people who experienced the storm first hand. Visitors to the exhibition will have the opportunity to write down their own storm stories, and these recollections will be added to the museum archives.

The Lyman & Merrie Wood Museum of Springfield History is located at the Quadrangle at 21 Edwards Street in downtown Springfield. Free onsite parking is available. Hours are Tuesday-Saturday, 10 a.m.-5 p.m., and Sunday, 11 a.m.-5 p.m.  Admission to the history museum is free on June 1 only.  Anyone wishing to visit the other Springfield Museums that day will need to pay admission, which is $12.50 for adults, $9 for seniors and college students, $6.50 for children 3-17, and free for children under three and museum members. The fee provides admission to all Springfield Museums and the Dr. Seuss Sculpture Garden. Springfield residents are always free with proof of address.
