“Swift River” will take over the site of a previous school to establish a residential detox facility.
A 600-acre closed school in the Massachusetts hilltowns of Plainfield and Cummington could become a for-profit drug and alcohol addiction center by the end of the summer. That is, if if it gets zoning approval.
MGM has placed a February 28th deadline for the center to vacate its building. The facility houses about 125 inmates who are in substance abuse treatment.
New research out of UMass-Amherst and Louisiana State University suggests that binge drinking during adolescence may reduce neural connections in the pre-frontal cortex — at least in rats. The study was released this week in the Journal of Neuroscience.
The Retailer's Association of Massachusetts has been pushing legislation that would allow package stores to open the day after holidays, including Christmas and new year's. Association vice president Bill rennie says the change would follow a similar loosening of Massachusetts so-called 'blue' laws in 2003, when the state started allowing alcohol sales on Sundays.
"The blue laws are antiquated and put us out on an island from surrounding states that don't have the same restrictions."
