This is a stopgap measure before the week of May 19th, when Berkshire Medical Center is scheduled to open a satellite ER in the North Adams hospital building.
North Adams Regional Hospital has been closed for almost a month, leaving many Berkshire County residents without nearby emergency care and hundreds without jobs. One ranking Massachusetts state senator says the future is bleak for similar small hospitals.
Berkshire Medical Center would operate the emergency room and buy the now-vacant hospital under an agreement announced Thursday.
Some 530 full and part-time jobs were at stake with the shutdown of Northern Berkshire Healthcare, which owned North Adams Regional Hospital. Berkshire Medical Center in Pittsfield says it’s hired 143 of those employees.
