Catholics in western Massachusetts are getting a new leader. Pope Francis picked Mitchell Rozanski of Baltimore to replace retiring bishop Timothy McDonnell.
A few years ago, the Roman Catholic diocese of Springfield projected that through retirement and transfers, by the year 2010, it would lose a third of its active priests. A new study from the Center for Economic Development at UMass Amherst suggests closing three churches — two in Pittsfield and one in Westfield. It also suggests merging a number of parishes.
