Away from the music clubs and bars of western Massachusetts, there’s a network of young musicians organizing concerts on a regular basis. A few local bands have emerged from this scene, and received attention far beyond the Pioneer Valley. One of them is California X, from Hadley.
Late last month, the influential music site Pitchfork declared that “Western Massachusetts is having another moment.” At the top of the list, And The Kids, a Northampton group whose album, “Turn to Each Other” is out this week.
An overflow crowd at Greenfield Community College packed a conference on opiate abuse and addiction in western Massachusetts Monday. The gathering included several calls for new state funding for addiction treatment.

A report compiled by The Boston Globe ranks median incomes of cities and towns across Massachusetts: both highest and lowest. Making the top ten of the lowest median incomes are five Western Massachusetts communities: Springfield, Holyoke, Monterey, Southbridge and Orange. Not one Western Massachusetts city or town is in the top twenty of highest median incomes.
