Som Victim of New Immigration Reforms

A Cambodian immigrant from Northampton, Massachusetts, being held in Hartford by federal immigration officers, is waiting to find out if he will be deported or released back to his community. 24 year-old Thea Som is not a citizen and five years ago he was convicted of felonies that landed him in prison. This gives the government authority to deport Som to Cambodia. As WFCR’s Av Harris reports, cases like Thea Som’s are more common now as a result of immigration reforms passed in the 1990’s and tougher enforcement of those rules after the attacks of 9/11.
