Substitute Jazz Host

Peter has been a substitute jazz host at New England Public Radio since 1998. He combines his love of music with a love of words, and is also Editor at Large at Merriam-Webster, where he has written definitions for many of Merriam-Webster’s dictionaries, is active as a blogger, podcaster, and speaker on language, and has served as pronouncer for spelling bees worldwide. He was named among TIME's 140 Best Twitter Feeds of 2013. Peter attended the University of Paris and earned his M.A. in French Literature at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. He is also a freelance musician.

This edition of Jazz Beat presents an interview conducted by guest host Peter Sokolowski with Doc Severinsen, famous as Johnny Carson’s bandleader on The Tonight Show and a virtuoso trumpet player who still practices every day. This conversation took place before a live audience in the recital hall at UMASS Amherst, and covers subjects from Doc’s early career touring with big bands, his work as a studio musician in New York, and his television days.
