MGM officials told Massachusetts gambling regulators Thursday that the company is on pace to hire 3,000 employees before it opens its Springfield casino next month. But so far, MGM is coming up short on some hiring goals.

A month before MGM opens a casino in Springfield, Massachusetts, city officials are either defending or staying quiet about the company's attempt to block lawsuits from shooting victims in Las Vegas.

The company that owns the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino in Las Vegas has asked federal courts to declare that it is not liable in the October 2017 mass shooting carried out by a gunman staying at Mandalay Bay.

Stephen Paddock stayed at the resort for several days before he opened fire on the Route 91 Harvest music festival. Aiming from the windows of his 32nd-floor hotel room, he killed 58 people and injured hundreds.

Seven years ago, getting into carpentry wasn’t even on Tyeka Robinson’s radar. She was a single mom struggling to make ends meet.

“I was working these odd and end jobs and not enough money to pay the bills,” she said. “I didn’t have a clue how to join the trades.”

Mohegan Sun and Foxwoods are pushing to keep their casino bars open beyond Connecticut’s current 2 a.m. cut-off on weekends, and 1 a.m. on weekdays. This comes after Massachusetts regulators said MGM Springfield could serve alcohol until 4 a.m. on the casino floor.
