First up in our news roundup this week: We get the thoughts of our panel about this week's mayoral elections across western Massachusetts, and we ask them how long they think mayors should serve. Voters in Westfield said at the ballot box it should only be for two years at a time, but many other places have switched to four-year terms. 

The MGM project has been promised to create a minimum of at least 3,000 casino, hotel and other jobs, of which at least 2,200 will be employed on a full-time equivalent basis with benefits.

Last week, state lawmakers decided to allow some people with criminal records to work in casinos. The head of MGM Springfield said the company is "very excited" by the change.

Massachusetts lawmakers have passed a measure that would make it easier for people with criminal histories to work at casinos in the state, including MGM Springfield, which is scheduled to open next year.

The U.S. Bureau of Indian Affairs has missed a deadline to approve or reject plans for a tribal casino in East Windsor, Connecticut. The casino would be jointly owned by the state’s two federally recognized Native American tribes. The tribes say this is not going to stop them from going ahead with their plans.

The nearly billion-dollar MGM casino in Springfield is slated to open this time next year. That's the company's expectation, and it's certainly the hope of Steve Crosby, chairman of the Massachusetts Gaming Commission.
