Voters in western Massachusetts turned out on Tuesday to elect new mayors in three cities -- and in two others, residents voted in the incumbents.

John Barrett is officially back in politics. The former long-time Democratic mayor of North Adams beat Republican Christine Canning to win a special election for state representative in northern Berkshire County.

Voters in Maine have easily approved a referendum to expand Medicaid for low-income adults, doing an end-run around Republican Gov. Paul LePage, who vetoed the move — a key element of Obamacare.

Maine is one of a handful of states deciding major issues by referendum on Tuesday, including New York and Ohio.

Now that the Connecticut legislature has taken control over its own television network, some advocates of government transparency are questioning the move.

Forty-four-year-old Bob Charland of Springfield never had much free time.

Auto mechanic by day, bouncer by night, single dad all the time, he was the kind of guy who became a troop leader for his daughter’s Girl Scout troop and who learned sign language so he could teach an automotive class to deaf students.

He was always going. Then, about eight months ago, he noticed something was off.

“My right hand was shaking all the time,” Bob says. “My speech was going off. I was forgetting more and more.”

Before he became head baker at King Arthur Flour in Norwich, Martin Philip trained as an opera singer and worked for an investment bank in New York City. Now the baker and author is sharing his expertise and answering questions for aspiring bakers.
